Who should get a flu shot?
Almost everyone 6 months and older, every fall. Federal health officials (CDC), family doctors (AAFP, PDF) and children's doctors (AAP) all agree on this. The CDC says September and October are good times to get one.
A flu shot matters most if you are 65 or older, pregnant or just had a baby, have a child under 5, or have a health problem like asthma, diabetes or heart disease. These people are more likely to get very sick from the flu (CDC).
If you are 65 or older, the CDC and family doctors say a stronger flu shot made for older adults is a better choice. Ask for one by name: high-dose, adjuvanted or recombinant. Family doctors say that if the place you go does not have one, get the regular shot rather than wait.
What about a COVID shot?
Here the groups do not all say the same thing, so we tell you who says what.
- Family doctors (AAFP, PDF) recommend a COVID shot this season for all adults, and two doses, six months apart, for people 65 and older.
- Doctors who care for pregnant women (ACOG) recommend one if you are pregnant, just had a baby, or are thinking about getting pregnant.
- Federal health officials (CDC) have not posted new COVID shot advice for this season. Their COVID shot page was last updated in July 2025.
For a child, or if you have a health problem or a weak immune system, ask your doctor or a pharmacist what is right for you.
Will it cost me?
- Medicare: pays for a flu shot and a COVID shot. You pay nothing if the provider accepts Medicare.
- Children: free through Vaccines for Children if they qualify (see above).
- No insurance: the health department's pages do not list a price for adults. They say prices are lower for people with less income. When you call to book, ask what your shot will cost.
The health department's shots page also links to its events calendar, where it lists shot clinics it holds around the community.
