Where to take trash, recycling and hard-to-dispose items in Morgantown and Monongalia County. Where we could not confirm a fact, we say so and give a phone number to call.
Find your pickup day
We could not find a public map or street list of pickup days. Inside Morgantown city limits, Republic Services is the hauler. Call the Monongalia County Solid Waste Authority at 304-292-3801 and ask who serves your address and which day they come.
A 2023 city checklist says to put trash and recycling out the same day, by 6 a.m. Check that with the hauler, since it may have changed.
What goes in the curbside bin
We could not find a current list from the city or hauler. The most recent clear guide we found is a 2019 Republic Services guide for Morgantown. It says glass food and beverage containers are accepted, and drinking glasses, ceramics and Pyrex are not. That guide is old, so confirm glass with the Solid Waste Authority at 304-292-3801 before you rely on it.
Recycling drop-off sites
Single-stream recycling drop-off center (county, free): 34 Olin St., Industrial Park. Monday to Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. It moved here in August 2025, so check moncountyrecycling.com for current hours.
Western Mon County Recycling Site (free, sorted by material): Arnettsville Community Association, 4120 Fairmont Rd., Morgantown. The county lists it as open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Mountaineer Transfer Station (run by Republic Services, fee for recycling): call 304-368-7735. The county lists hours as Monday to Friday 5:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and Saturday 7:00 to 11:00 a.m. It does not take tires.
Electronics: the county holds a free e-cycle event for county residents, with another planned for spring 2027. West Virginia also has a free take-back list for certain devices, linked from the county recycling page.
Tires: a state tire collection runs monthly in Morgantown, except December, January and February. The county's tire page has the yearly schedule.
Latex paint: the county plans a collection in 2027 but has no date yet. For oil-based paint and other household chemicals, the county points to the Morgantown Utility Board's yearly household hazardous waste day.
Batteries: we could not find a local drop-off program for batteries. Ask the Solid Waste Authority at 304-292-3801.
